- Research at the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine at St Petersburg University focuses on the following areas:
- Molecular mechanisms of functions, development, and correction of dysfunctions in the human body. The role of molecular, humoral, structural and functional changes in the progression of human diseases.
- Pathogenetic mechanisms of cardiogenic shock and myocardial rupture in elderly individuals.
- Role of enterovirus infection in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its complications, mechanisms of enterovirus infection impact, and the efficacy of preconditioning in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome associated with enterovirus infection.
- Prognostic significance of gene polymorphisms in the development of coronary artery disease and its complications.
- Prognostic assessment of chronic heart failure in elderly and senile individuals.
- Disorders in phosphorus-calcium metabolism caused by chronic kidney disease.
- Primary and secondary forms of osteoporosis, its diagnostic methods and treatment.
- Internal organ diseases associated with ageing.
- Pathogenetic mechanisms of cardiovascular damage in patients with chronic kidney disease.

The Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases is home to a Student Scientific Society. Meetings are held once a month. The Society’s activities are focused on the following areas:
- Developing research skills
- Cultivating lecturing and presentation abilities
- Broadening clinical horizons,
- Fostering clinical reasoning in future doctors,
- Preparing graduate thesis works.
